INTERACTIVE METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH

Teaching passes two stages: learn first, then try to communicate. After practicing the language material and doing the exercises, the learners are expected to use the language in real communication, to express themselves in English and not only use the structures and words they have learned.
As for learning lexical units in the early level (1-5 classes) I face to making posters (this method is taken from Cambridge methodology). The conversational topic “All about Myself”: the pupils draw and write on the lists of paper words and phrases or even sentences and illustrate them by pictures (photos). Eg., “I am Kate. I’m a pupil of the second class. I’m from Ukraine. I’m 7. Ican speak English”. The conversation “My family”: in the middle of the list of paper they can put photo of their family (with all members of the family) and write the phrases or sentences: This is my mother. This is my sister. This is my grandfather, etc.(for the first class). The topic “My Flat. My House”. In this case the learners draw the plan of their flat (room) with the definitions of all kinds of rooms: This is my living-room, my bedroom, my kitchen, my bathroom, etc. At the lessons the learners can use these posters to tell about their family, looking at their pictures and words (phrases) which they wrote themselves (firstly they write these lexical units into their vocabularies).
As for interactive methods of teaching language I use brainstorming (especially in the beginning of the lesson). It includes such tasks as: In Cambridge methodology it is named as IDEA MAP. In the 8-th class we have the conversational topic “History of England”. I propose the learners to think of idea maps: “Dangerous life 2000 years ago” and “The life today”
2000 thousands years ago – wild animals, cold weather, absence of doctors, deep rivers, fires, poisonous food, etc.
The life today – air, water and soil pollution; alcohol, drugs, smoking; air and car catastrophies, stresses, AIDs and cancer, etc.
As for conversational topic “Histoty of Ukraine” in the same class I give such brainstorming as;
Name 5 things which associate with the historical events of Ukraine:
Name 5 famous people from the Ukrainian history and with what historical events they are connected.
I think these methods are very useful to learn new lexical units and memorise them and of cause they help the learners to communicate on all the levels, especially on elementary and intermediate ones. The pupils are talking in English on the topic and are enjoying themselves.
